JOURNAL: The Interdiscursive Communication between Literature and Bioethics. Jana Tomašovičová and Bogumiła Suwara (Editors), Bratislava: World Literature Studies, 2024

About:

The interdiscursive communication between literature and bioethics has gone through significant changes under the influence of dynamic bio-scientific advancements. The articles in this issue document the shift from the traditional portrayal of the doctor-patient relationship to new themes inspired by contemporary bioethical challenges, including regenerative medicine, gene editing, cloning, human enhancement, and euthanasia, thus demonstrating the reciprocal transfer of literary and bioethical discourses. Through the emergence of this new interdiscursive space, literary and artistic representations are enriching the rationalist ethical rhetoric and normative argumentation with many humanistic aspects, including a narrative approach to ethics, specifically bioethics.

BOOK: Transhumanism and Posthumanism in the Perspective of Biotechnologies. Jana Tomašovičová and Bogumiła Suwara (Editors), Berlin: Logos Verlag Berlin, 2023

About:

The dynamic development of biotechnologies and the deepening knowledge of natural and information sciences expand the possibilities of human modification. In this book, the ideas of transhumanism and posthumanism are analyzed from several philosophical perspectives, examining their overlap with artistic expression. The possible ontological, ethical, and social implications associated with the fulfillment of transhumanist and posthumanist visions are explored, as well as the validity of traditional philosophical concepts under these new conditions. Additionally, the influence of transhumanist and posthumanist ideas on literary, visual, cinematic, and digital art is analyzed, and interpretative possibilities are explored.

BOOK: The Blurring of Boundaries in Bioscientific Discourse. Jana Tomašovičová (Editor), Berlin: Logos Verlag Berlin, 2021.

About:

New technologies have revealed previously unknown and invisible parts of the human body and made it visible at the molecular level, revealing in turn more detailed structures and arrangements than those which were previously available. In doing so, in many ways they refine, expand, and even completely overturn forms of contemporary knowledge.

This book maps the shifts and blurring of boundaries in contemporary bioscientific discourse. The authors of its chapters trace the shifts of boundaries in terms of the gradual blurring of the validity of established concepts, interpretive frameworks, and standards of judgment, which are analysed from ontological, gnoseological, ethical, and social perspectives. At the same time, they also map the blurring of boundaries in terms of the interdisciplinary crossing of boundaries between various scientific and artistic disciplines. The shifting of boundaries ultimately forms a part of these boundaries’ definition; upon the basis of a rationally guided discussion, these shifts can be guided and corrected so as to avoid any irreversible damage.

Jana Tomašovičová is a philosopher with a special interest in contemporary philosophy and bioethics. She analyses the impact of biotechnology on traditional social, ethical, and anthropological concepts and their relevance in new conditions. She is an associate professor at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia. During her bioethics research, she conducted short research stays at the universities of Bonn, Heidelberg, Tübingen, and Zürich.

BOOK: Promises and perils of emerging technologies for human condition: Voices from four postcommunist Central and East European countries. Peter Sýkora (Editor), Berlin: Peter Lang, 2019.

About:

Emerging technologies are defined as fast-growing radically novel technologies with an estimated prominent impact on human society in the future. The ambiguity and uncertainty of emerging technologies at the same time raise techno-optimistic expectations, as well as serious worries about possible unwanted and unpredicted negative consequences following their introduction into wider practice. And because of their radical novelty, emerging technologies also challenge various traditional philosophical and ethical concepts, established risk assessment methods, science and technology governance and policies, science to public communication and practices within and outside the medical domain. The aim of this volume is to present the view of ten authors from four postcommunist Central and East European countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Latvia) on emerging technologies and human enhancement. They analyse the topic from various perspectives: anthropological, ethical, philosophical, ontological, empirical, and legal.
